i was going to post something fun about keegan messing finally ditching the dad rock for mika. however, catching up with fs news means that i found out about the papadakis & ciceron documentary, in which gabriella talked about the lack of support she received from her skating partner and coaching team when she became pregnant (tw: suicide ideation). this coaching team also coaches a huge chunk of the world’s top ice dancers.

this sport needs such a huge overhaul :(

It’s so interesting to me how different J-ent companies are approaching boybands right now. You have JE transforming their newest boybands into utaite; Stardust chugging along in the 2010s musically but now with TikTok-ready dances; BMSG going full K-pop from the audition show down to the “fan”cams; and Avex replicating 2000s K-pop, except for the one group trying for something similar to Why Don’t We until they pivoted and went C-idol pop (although half of them are still doing R&B-lite solo releases). And now Yoshiki is doing a boyband audition show!

Like, obviously girl groups and boybands are very different markets, but I’d love to have boybands with an identifiable sound. (I don’t necessarily want a consistent producer, although that helps — Nakata and Perfume being the most famous example, but Suiyoubi no Campanella was originally meant to be a girl group, and a lot of indie girl groups have a single producer.) The Stardust groups probably come closest to having an identifiable sound, if you exclude Choutokkyuu for being a meme and GenJibu’s original incarnation, and it makes sense because Stardust is better known for its girl groups.

If you were expecting actual sports, I can do a belated figure skating worlds update. Kaori gold! Roman Sadovsky did okay! Adam Siao Him Fa is the only dude with decent music. And obviously very happy for Stephane and his son Shoma.

some of these are favourites, and some are just ones i want to refer back to for whatever reason. i’ll probably keep adding to this as i remember programs.

Read the Paul Poirier interview in Glory from back in June today. It’s a long interview, and he talks about being a gay figure skater, the heteronormativity of ice dance, and the ban on athletes being political and the inherent politics of the Olympics.

(Unfortunately, the ISU has decided to hold Worlds with inadequate safety protocols and force skaters to attend, so let’s talk about fictional skating instead.)

Things about Yuri on Ice that were unrealistic when they aired but are more realistic now, updated list:

  • four quads in a free — see previous post
  • quad loop in competition — see above
  • anyone willingly wearing the Skate Canada jacket outside of WTT or Olympics — more Canadian skaters started wearing them afterwards
  • coach deciding to just adopt a coach-less skater — Stéphane Lambiel adopted Shoma Uno out of the blue at the 2019 Internationaux. (Well, it turns out it wasn’t quite out of the blue, Shoma had briefly hung out at Lambiel’s rink beforehand, but it certainly felt that way when it happened!)

Cut from my previous post, because it felt out of place.

Before the last episode airs I just want to do some retrospection. Back in March when the first Yuri on Ice trailer aired and we knew nothing but the names of Yuuri, Victor, and Yuri, I was already over the moon. I finally had a figure skating anime, one with good animation and beautiful choreography. I was still worried of course, that they would make amateur mistakes about the figure skating world or the points system (I was fully prepared to write essays about GOE). But I was hopeful.

The first episode finally aired after months of waiting. I thought Victuuri was too over the top at first, but willing to forgive that for the good writing and relatable characters. Onsen on Ice seemed silly but it’s an anime, right? The choreography was good, the music was good, the animation was decent. All of my expectations were already met and I was delighted.

Then we started to see more of the skating world—the little things like skating club friendships, the small circle of competitive figure skating where everyone knows each other from being in the same events and banquets and hotels. The highs and lows that happen when you’re on the ice for long minutes by yourself with all of the stress in the world on you. The slowly development of Victor and Yuuri’s relationship from comic relief to something deeper and timeless. The involvement of world-renown skaters, from Evgenia Medvedeva’s cosplaying to Nobunari Oda and Stéphane Lambiel’s cameos. Watching Yuri on Ice making fans discover, or rediscover, a love of skating. In a few short months, it’s become something much larger than just a simple anime about figure skating.

Whatever comes after this, it’s been an amazing journey with Kubo-sensei, the Yuri on Ice team, and everyone else.

First Oda Nobunari and now Stephane Lambiel lending their voices to Yuri on Ice! This makes me intensely happy. I hope they throw a shout-out in to Evgenia Medvedeva at some point too, because she’s more or less responsible for the entire skating community watching YoI.

Anyway, I made a post on Tumblr a few weeks after the show started airing about Femininity, Men’s Skating, and Yuri on Ice (edit 2018/12/12: now crossposted to Dreamwidth), if you’re interested in my thoughts on yoi the history of toxic masculinity and veiled homophobia in figure skating and why Yuri on Ice’s promotion of femininity in men’s skating should be applauded.

Also, ICYMI, Johnny Weir gave an in-depth interview with The Geekiary about how he felt watching Yuri on Ice.

Yuri on Ice acknowledging the “feminine” element of men’s figure skating means so much. For decades there have been loud voices in the skating community who insist that men’s skaters had to be masculine and macho, but Yuri on Ice embraced the feminine men’s skater as the style of a winner.

There’s a crystalline beauty in stumbling across a fic which you like, and then you look up the writer’s œuvre and realize you’d read a fic by them ages ago on a different site in a completely different fandom and era. Like wandering among uni grounds in the beginning of the year and running into an old friend.

I’m having one of those weeks (months) where I can’t really breathe or move very much, and have compensated for it by diving much too deep into a fandom. So I’ve been reading a lot of KHR fic, and only just remembered that KHR was during LJ era so I actually have to look for rec lists and can’t just wade through AO3 and FFN. Both of which I already did, if you want to know how dire my straits are.

Anyway, Yuri on Ice! I’m incredibly excited for this anime. For one, it looks like they’re actually going to be semi-accurate to RL figure skating. I’ve read enough figure skating manga over the years to despair about this, multiple times. Secondly, the artistry shown in the 1st teaser alone—Viktor’s melancholy look up, hair flowing, hand moving in despair—wow. The sound of the ice scratching as a skater comes to a stop took me straight to the rink-side watching someone skate. Also Suwabe Junichi is voicing the artistic brooding Russian skater Viktor and ToyoToshi is voicing the go-getter main character Yuuri, so I’d probably have watched this regardless of the fact it’s all of my anime dreams come true at once.

(Fingers extremely crossed they don’t screw up the figure skating details because I have been known to rant about GOE for days on end. I recently confirmed how deeply I am in this hole as I was at a figure skating event among hardcore fans, and was somehow the person providing scoring commentary. Aiyah.)
