At this stage of the competition, being chosen for the group has as much to do with group fit as it has to do with work ethic and talent.

“They were labeling us as the ‘real girls,’ like we were gonna be very, very authentic,” she said. “So they thought the name [Faky] showed self-awareness—like, we’ll call this fake, because we’re so real.” Never mind, she added, that the name was made up by the company.

No No Girls is last year’s idol competition show from BMSG headed by pop/rap star Chanmina. “No No” stands for girls who ‘had been told no all their lives’, or more simply: “No FAKE, No LAZE, No HATE”.

Haven’t I been burned by enough audition shows? Haven’t I seen the many attempts of Yoshiki trying to make a band happen in the US?

Alas. )

You know it’s the last episode when there’s weepy flashback montages with voiceovers and drama OST piano. We even got acted video reels setting up their stage performances!¹

atom boyz: the show bringing taiwanese people together by judging me for watching it :p i am on a tape delay of one week, since even though the performances themselves are posted on youtube the day of airing, the full episodes are only uploaded a week later.

in dire times, i ended up watching bonus footage. and, only two people — two people who teach dance — knew the choreo to shinee lucifer?! *cries in old* (bonus kidz 小孩 going full aegyo to twice T_T.)

alright, i’m caught up to atom boyz now. we’re just past the third round, the planets association event, where two teams are combined together then re-split into a vocal and a dance subteam. teams that are stronger in dance were paired with teams that are stronger in vocals. interestingly the teams got to nominate which members went on stage as part of which subteam.

i’m on twitter ban, so i’m trying to find new non-productive hobbies.

been watching the first, sky-hi’s boyband audition show from last year, since just before i stopped going on twitter. i just made it past the filler ep, aka “being a tourist around lake yamanaka” — a nice change from horror jump scares. (although they did spring a birthday party on one guy.) i’ve watched a lot of these shows, but i enjoy this one’s emphasis on formal dance and vocal lessons. and the small group from the outset means that every contestant gets a chance to shine.

started playing mini motorways. i honestly didn’t think i would like this game, because i usually find this genre of game stressful. but i have free apple arcade rn and enjoyed watching a civil engineer on youtube play this during pandemic 2.0. so i started playing it, managed to lose track of time, and three-or-more hours later it was 5 am D: the reason i like this game is the pause button! ominous timers do pop up when i’m on my way to losing, but the ui is otherwise so nice and relaxing i’m not even stressed?

Well, Produce 101–style shows have just been banned in China along with unofficial fanclubs and gossip accounts. No more dairy wars. Also, it looks like we’re going to see more celebs apologize for their fans like XZ.

This whole Lelush situation with Produce Camp / Chuang remembered me of that time a contestant of Under Nineteen, another idol factory/bootcamp reality show, staged a revolt and tanked the entire show.

As some of you may know, Avex has a Japanese-American boyband called Intersection which debuted in late 2017. I’ve been lowkey following them since autumn 2018 because I thought their marketing was interesting. Japan Times has a good interview with them from early 2020, which some of this post is based on. Decided I might as well do this! I’m posting these in sets organized by theme, since I don’t think anyone wants me to post 26 times in a row. Grabbed from [personal profile] naye.

Full list, if you want to do this yourself:

so i signed up for yuletide on a whim this year because i wanted to read fic of adam le ray from the hour and there’s approximately a grand total of seven on ao3. now, i’d seen the early signups and this was very much a hail mary prompt. imagine to my utter shock and delight i received a beautifully bittersweet adam le ray fic: a long way gone and back by requiem, which is everything i could have asked for.

as for the one i wrote: i ended up with sirens, a show i am very fond of but time had given a haze to. a rewatch confirmed even if the soundtrack is now quite dated it’s still an utter riot. my recipient and i share similar tastes in tropes which made me very happy, because i got to write one of my favourites. it was surprisingly incredibly easy to put ash and stuart on paper; they were such a joy to write. as sirens was filmed in leeds but i don’t listen to any leeds bands, i split the difference by writing this whole thing to bombay bicycle club and franz ferdinand instead. here it is: right thoughts, right words.

I checked out yahyel last year because “TAO” popped up on my feed, but since its music video is psychological horror with very unsettling implications I noped the hell out. Because of this I didn’t check the rest of their discography out until this month and they’re not on my 2018 albums list, but Human is incredible. I’m obsessed with “Pale” and “Hypnosis”.

Another album I missed last year was cali≠gari’s 14, but it’s disappointing for a cali≠gari album. However, 2017’s 13 is cali≠gari in top form, up there with Dai 6 and Dai 7 in jazz rock and post-punk messiness along with the regular eroguro dissonance. I also missed a XA-VAT EP last year (közi of Malice Mizer fame & cali≠gari’s Shuuji being fashion), but it was limited release so good luck I’ll ever hear any of that.

As for this year, my top albums are shaping up to be CHAI, Sakanaction, and Tempalay. EPs currently only Gozensanji to Taikutsu. Also, because this is Japan and several CDs are unavailable unless I buy a physical CD possibly at a physical concert, I’m trying to get my hands on: mol-74, mol-74; Gomess, Teru; cali≠gari, 0; and Hector, Heisei Kyounen EP (Metronome’s Sharaku and cali≠gari’s Ao are involved; it’s a reboot of Cuckoo).

I am back on the Ben Whishaw wagon like I never left summer 2012. It’s a good chance for me to watch all those TV shows I meant to watch seven years ago; I still haven’t finished The Hour. I think the last English TV show I watched prior to this bout of frenzy was either The Thick of It, In The Flesh s1, or possibly No Heroics. Maybe Grandma’s House or the first episode of London Spy? Anyway, Whishaw and Peter Capaldi will reunited in Armando Iannucci’s David Copperfield, starring Dev Patel and out later this year. That’s something to look forward to that won’t be a complete shitshow like Bond 25—even Phoebe Waller-Bridge can’t save that.

(Speaking of reunifications, I’d missed that Ben did another cameo in another Years & Years video, mostly because Palo Santo bored me as a concept and an album. Also Hugh Grant really seems to like working with Ben these days.)

RIP KyoAni staff. Hearing that some of them were in their twenties and had just started working in April….
