I spent a lot more time this year revisiting albums from last year and previous than listening to new stuff. The lack of pressure was nice? Nonetheless, I did find some new LPs & EPs to like (slash hyperfocus on) this year.

We’re back and only two days late! I blame that one year Accusefive released an album on NYE for my inclination for procrastination :p

Those of you who have had me on your reading list for a while have seen the evolution of this year-end roundup go from “vibes with numbers” to “attempt at real music blogging” and now to “vibes with no numbers”. In that vein it’s been freeing to start using “DNF” on albums. In the old days when there was no streaming and I ~obtained~ albums in the whole, I went by the motto of Don’t Like, Don’t Listen, Delete Now. But with the inclusion of Japanese music onto streaming I would either listen to one song via my discovery methods, or attempt to ~experience the full album~ by slogging through it, which was no fun. So “DNF” is back! Sorry not sorry to Ayumi Hamasaki.

Indie idol groups continue to draw my attention, as more and more of them dive into (and stay in) genres I love. Also two Taiwanese bands made the cut — although I missed getting tickets to both their local shows! (That’s 0/2 for me on supporting Taiwanese bands in the 2023–4 touring season.)

To the LPs and EPs of the year!

And, as usual, some songs I liked this year:

Spotify

(Ugh Spotify was so broken when I was trying to rearrange this playlist. I might try Youtube Music next year since coverage is getting better there.)

This year’s list isn’t strictly my top albums (etc). A couple snuck in solely due to the fact I wrote so much about them. And one of my draft top 6 got crossed off because I barely wrote a sentence about it when I listened to it — surely it’s not important enough for the roundup!

Here’s a Spotify playlist of selected songs from these albums, along with some other songs.

Wow, it does not seem like nearly the end of the year at all.

I didn’t get the chance to dig deeply into any albums this year. A few singles I was obsessed with, sure, but no whole albums or EPs. So the Spotify playlist that is meant to accompany this post turned into a playlist of songs I liked this year in general. And it happens to also feature some songs from albums that are also on this list.

☞ Spotify: 2021
Roughly: 1. alt rock; 18. pop rock; 26. electropop; 37. alt pop; 46. chill pop

Anyway, onto the albums etc! Links below are to Bandcamp.

I won’t be doing a proper ranking this year as I just don’t have the energy. Instead, I’ve grouped albums, minis, and EPs arbitrarily into On Repeat, Really Like, Weird Music Section, Other: Pop Rock/Alt Rock, Other: Pop. The list clocks out at 22 albums etc.

Unless otherwise noted, all albums etc are Japanese. Bandcamp links provided where available, otherwise there’s a Spotify playlist at the end with picks from each album etc. Except for mel’s dayflower, which is only on Bandcamp!

Several albums I wanted to listen to this year all came out in December, which was stressful! I was already behind as I wasn’t as much into music this year; the only two albums I listened to on release day were Sakanaction and Harry Styles.

I think this is the first year I’ve managed four languages on my albums list.
