Your main fandom of the year?
This was the year Louis Tomlinson finally kicked off debut album promo so! Louis Tomlinson! Walls!
Your favourite film you watched this year?
“The Farewell”, which I wrote about here. Golden Globes fight me.
Honorary mention: two short films I enjoyed this year were “The Sea” (wrote about here) and Harry Styles’ “Adore You” MV, which actually made me cry twice.
(When the hell is my pre-order of “Benjamin”, dir. Simon Amstell and starring Colin Morgan, coming.)
Your favourite book read this year?
I didn’t like any actual book I read this year (yes I am woefully behind on my SFF reading list). As for fics, I don’t have any standout favourites this year. Some recs:
- the dogfather by hollimichele (HP) — long fix-it fluff
- I could be wrong, I could be ready by harryromper (HP) — for that classic post-war H/D get together feel
- Murmuration by fringecity (BTS RPF) — I haven’t actually finished reading this yet due to circumstances I’ll get into later, but wonderfully written dystopian mystery.
Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
It’s not my top-rated album of the year, but definitely Yu Pei-Jen’s Jen Jen. I’m sure there’s lots of diaspora poetry about how language takes them back to the comfort of their childhood, but I never related to that emotion until I listened to this album’s Hokkien tracks.
Your favourite TV show of the year?
Honestly I haven’t watched much this year, not even anime. I enjoyed An Art Lover’s Guide S1, which is a a factual show from 2017 but it was aired here this year.
Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
I had no new fandoms this year. None. Perhaps my age is finally showing. I did get into reading James Bond fic which I didn’t do when either Skyfall or Spectre came out. Again: my age.
Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Given maybe? I knew the manga was boring—I’d managed to read it and completely forget I read it by the time the anime announcement rolled around—but I had hopes the anime wouldn’t bore me.
Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
It’s Ben Whishaw hours. I spent $18 at VIFF for him! (Well $2 of that was the VIFF membership which I ended up using elsewhere as well, but that was me enacting sunk cost fallacy.) I purchased A Very English Scandal episode-by-episode. And I paid insane shipping on an issue of Another Man for his roughly 8-page feature but let’s pretend that didn’t happen.
Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
None. A sad year.
Your biggest squee moment of the year?
- Louis Tomlinson singing the words “Princess Park” live. (If you know, you know.)
- The first time I saw Kévin Aymoz’s free skate program to “In This Shirt”. He’s had an amazing year, and he’s such a breath of fresh air of innovative choreography and emotional vulnerability to the skating world.
The most missed of your old fandoms?
I hard-quit BTS fandom in the middle of this year after they performed in Riyadh on the invitation of that government, but I still kind of miss watching their silly video content.
A fandom you haven’t tried yet but want to?
I don’t know—I’m going to be very busy next year since Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson are both on tour, so I won’t have time for any new fandoms.
Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Louis Tomlinson! Walls!
I’m also very excited for “A Personal History of David Copperfield” since that stars Dev Patel (!) with Peter Capaldi (!) and Ben Whishaw (!) and is directed by Armando Iannucci (!).
