• Perfume / Sumikko Disco
  • Perfume — ahem, Tapume — contributes a delightful Sumikko Gurashi movie theme.
• Pasocom Music Club / It’s (Not) Ordinary feat. Mico
  • A short ditty that would be perfect for a mahou shoujo anime that’s worryingly cheery, like Gakuen Alice.
• Yoasobi / Biri-Biri
  • It’s Pokémon ad season! The references to old Gameboy battle themes are a great touch. Anyway, back to “Piplup Step” on repeat.
• bala / Tokyo Survivor (CW: flashing, motion sickness)
  • Three singles in and bala has already changed members! This is Kenmochi Hidefumi’s 2023 Tokyo update of 2015 Sapporo tourism ad “Shakushain” but not as much of an earworm.
• odol / reverie ★
  • The rhythm turns the simple melody into something anxious, like the verge of a decision.
• Sweet John & She Her Her Hers / Echo
  • Two of my indie pop faves join together in wistfulness.
• RAY / Nemophila (live) ★
  • Obligatory idol shoegaze with some gorgeous chorals.
• Elephant Gym / Ocean in the night Orchestra ver. (feat. Hom Shenhao & Kaohsiung City Wind Orchestra) (CW: flashing) ★
  • I haven’t checked in on Elephant Gym in a very long time. When I was first introduced to them, they were too abstract for my taste. Their recent output, like this, are very much not: indie pop with layers of vocals, guitar, and brass. And unfortunately their Vancouver show has already sold out D:
• passepied / cube (CW: motion sickness)
  • A bit like a Hoshino Gen TV theme with a tinge of 8-bit influence and an amped up breakdown.

And for a touch of summer: Takeuchi Mariya did the Pokémon Concierge theme.

Yeah :( We got a storm here today too and it was twilight at like 2pm. It’s so difficult to stay awake T_T
