Watched this because of a rec from [tumblr.com profile] deus-ex-moshina. The premise: some obaasans set up a ghost marriage and tell the homophobic main character who picks up the angbao that if same sex marriage is legal in the living world it’s obviously also in the ghost world. OBVIOUSLY.

It’s a feel-good-and-then-cry buddy cop comedy with a mainstream release budget. The directing and pacing are solid, though the plot is obviously silly and the jokes can get quite crude. There’s some cultural humour that the subtitles do not cover — the wonky Für Elise garbage run scene had me dead on the floor.

I love the ghost husband character so much. People who make threats while smiling +100. By contrast, the main character starts off as the worst sort of jock, though he eventually becomes a better person and makes everyone cry for twenty whole minutes.

Warnings for this film: The main character is a raging homophobe during the first 30 mins. Aaron Yan is a cheater who gets punched. Horror movie gore played for laughs. Non-consensual possession. Car accidents.

Anyway it’s a great movie; I highly enjoyed it. And there’s Mao Mao/Ming-han fic on AO3 so time to get reading!

I’m surprised to have stumbled into a mention of this film! Mainly because my friend and I chose this to watch months ago for a hang-out on a whim, and the cinema room was deserted save for both of us, so I somehow ended up with the impression that this was not well-known, though I should’ve known better, haha. A lot of my experiences were different from yours, and thus my opinions of the movie, but it’s true the comedy aspect was quite enjoyable and the two MCs make for a quirky duo! Though I felt with all the plot and and setup and character development, a miniseries format may have suited it better than a movie.

It’s such an unexpected but pleasant coincidence to see someone mention the film on DW; it was good with a lot of potential but I’d probably have forgotten about it if not for this post! ^^
