I am currently Kirby sleeping in a bed, but it was a busy month for music and especially live music! Louis Tomlinson had a tank top torn off by fans three times. (Calvin Klein tanks survive when luxury names won’t.) Anyway, here are some songs I liked this month.
- Sakana Nikki / Suimen (CW: motion sickness) ★
- A journey of bright hope in folk rock.
- Art-School / Moonrise Kingdom
- The inspiration appears to be early-00s jrock groups doing Britpop, so of course I like it.
- kinopo. / Ju-tai (CW: flashing)
- Weird idol pop! The Street View-inspired music video is fun. The song itself starts out as rapping over a drum beat with some funky retro synths but builds into a rock epiphany.
- Yukichi Kasaku/men / Youth
- Experimental piano pop with dashes of drum n bass. It’s not piano pop without scale runs!
- Odd Eye Circle / Air Force One (CW: flashing)
- Nice to see this Loona sub-unit back with a new agency.
- Yoshizawa Kayako / Koorigashi
- Summer movie theme season!
- illiomote / My Super Good Friend ★
- A fun pop punk song with a sprinkle of technopop.
- Mariana in our Heads / Shadow
- Shoegaze dream pop meets melancholy ’00s anime ending.
- Plastic Girl in Closet / Ramune River (CW: flashing)
- If you were wondering where the shoegaze rock went: it’s right here!
- Batten Girls / Anata-gata Dokosa ~Amakuchi Shouyu Shitate~ (CW: motion sickness)
- More off-the-wall idol pop, this one promoting Kumamoto soy sauce. Presumably.
