Thought I’d try something new so here’s some of the music I’ve been listening to lately. Unlike my year-end posts it’s not necessarily songs that came out during this period though a lot of it did. Faves are ★’d.
Youtube playlist, minus the wowgokoro song because it’s not on Youtube.
- Serph feat. Zun / Piplup Step ★
- This is such a catchy, beautifully produced song that perfectly balances hope and melancholy, and it’s all for a Pokémon ad campaign.
- Zeus / Sore wa, Wednesday (feat. Hitomitoi)
- Love the Cardcaptor Sakura opening theme vibes.
- Ako / Tenshi (cw: guns)
- I’m always for pentatonic scales over quick claps, it’s the 2000s weeaboo in me.
- Candygirl / Uh-Oh
- Reminds me of the Persona soundtracks with the jazzy chill hop style.
- chelmico / Meidaimae (prod. tofubeats)
- tofubeats understands the chelmico sound is 90s j-hip hop meets weird.
- Stayc / Young Luv
- Yeah I do want more early 2010s pop rock influence in k-pop.
- Utada Hikaru / Somewhere Near Marseilles
- This song took a while to grow on me, but it turns out I am weak to twelve minute dance floor tracks.
- Nakamura Kaho / Sayonara Claire
- The speedy bpm brings a sense of anxiety that builds into a careening cacophony of a breakdown. (From the vocalist for the movie Belle / Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime.)
- Bungeitenkoku / Daihachi Tenshi, Tsuushin Kichiryoku
- A mess of fast-plucked guitars and hurried drums in between what could almost have been a pop song.
- Stereogirl / I Don’t (But Someday)
- Pop punk!
- AprilBlue / Seaside ★
- Fuzzy dream pop rock with soaring choruses that hits you right in the nostalgia.
- Jyocho / Kanashimi no Goal (The End of Sorrow)
- Someone made Jyocho get some more mainstream j-rock production and it’s a good balance for them.
- Tomggg / Kadode (feat. Utae)
- It’s nice to see Tomggg take on something more orchestral. The result is very fantasy anime soundtrack with perfectly placed instrumental touches.
- wowgokoro / Flash Freezing ★
- Melancholic dream pop meets Touhou doujin circle/early netlabel electronic production.
- Louis Tomlinson / Copy of a Copy of a Copy (live)
- Now that I’ve seen Louis live I’ve been replaying his sets from this tour for the instant serotonin hit.
- kinoue64 / Sayonara, Mata Aou ne
- I usually avoid Vocaloid vocals, but it sort of works with shoegaze?
- snooty / Senkouhanabi
- Since it’s that season, obligatory graduation song vibes.
- Regal Lily / Wakusei Trash
- Okay, no more sad j-rock, now for the hopeful stuff.
- Ruck to Soine Gohan / Watashi
- A pop rock song that makes you want to go to the beach.
- Cody Lee / Setagaya-Daita
- This sounds like such a Spitz song.
- Kobayashi Izumi / Lum no Love Song (Reboot) (Gus Bonito Remix)
- From a series of super fun cover remix EPs of the classic anime opening.
