Drip Drip Drip
Artist: Jen Jen (Yu Pei-jen)
Lyrics & Music: Jen Jen (Yu Pei-jen)
uē bô tshut oo-oo--ê ba̍k-tsiu
kóng buē tshut tsı̍t kù uân-tsíng--ê lí-iû
kah ka-kī kong bián-kiann bián-kiann
tán--ı̍t-ē tō beh thinn-kng--ah
Dark, dark eyes I couldn’t draw
An explanation I couldn’t fully give
Told myself don’t be scared, don’t be scared
Wait a moment and it’ll be dawn
thiann lâng kóng ê uē kám ū-iánn
hue khui hue siā tsū-liân--ê--ah
lōo ê thâu-tsîng kám ū lâng teh tán guá
tán guá ta̍uh-ta̍uh-á kiânn
Can the words I hear others say be true?
Flowers bloom, flowers wither, it’s only natural
How could there be someone on the road ahead waiting for me?
Waiting for me, to walk slowly
tah tah tah pue kuè oo-àm
tah tah tah háu háu háu kui àm
tah tah tah hiông-hiông ua̍t-thâu ná tsí tshun guá tsı̍t lâng¹
tah tah tah hōo sī beh làu kàu tang-sî á
tah tah tah ba̍k-sái nà lú tshit buē ta
tah tah tah guá kan-na ē-kì--eh lí kàu guá siá kuè guá ê miâ
Drip, drip, drip, the darkness that flies past
Drip, drip, drip, the returning gloom that howls, howls, howls
Drip, drip, drip, I suddenly turning around. How could I be the only one left?
Drip, drip, drip. Until when will the rain keep falling?
Drip, drip, drip, why are my tears becoming harder to dry?
Drip, drip, drip. I only remember you once taught me how to write my name
sī siáng thau tsáu liáu sî-kan
sī siáng thau tsáu guá ê ióng-kám
sī siáng thau tsáu liáu lí ê oo thâu-tsang
sī siáng
sī siáng
Who is it that stole away time?
Who is it that stole away my bravery?
Who is it that stole away the black of your hair?
Who is it?
Who is it?
hué-sio ê muí tsı̍t kang
tuā-tsuí tshiâng tsáu ê muí tsı̍t kang
kám ū lâng guān-ì tán
tán guá piàn-sîng koh-khah hó--ê lâng
Every day a firestorm
Every day swept away by flood
How could someone want to wait?
Wait for me, to become a better person
pue kuè oo-àm
háu háu háu kui àm
tah tah tah hiông-hiông ua̍t-thâu ná tsí tshun guá tsı̍t lâng¹
The darkness that flies past
The returning gloom that howls, howls, howls
Drip, drip, drip, I suddenly turning around. How could I be the only one left?
bāng hónn thinn hónn sim-tsiânn
bāng tshuì tshiò ba̍k tshiò pe̍h siám-siám--ê tshuì-khí
bāng guá koh khai-sí līn lī
bāng guá tah-tah kí khuànn--honnh tshing
I hope for good skies and good spirits
I hope for smiling mouths, smiling eyes, and sparkling white teeth
I hope I can start learning how to read again
I hope I can see my whole self clearly
Notes
I use Tailo romanization. If you’re used to POJ: ts(h) = ch(h), ing = eng, u + a/e/ai = o + a/e/ai, oo = o͘, nn = ⁿ
Ideographs for Hokkien aren’t well-standardized and the written lyrics for this song often do not conform to Taiwanese Hokkien dictionaries. I tried to romanize and translate according to the sung lyrics.
¹ Not sure about the romanization, it sounds more like “thang” to me.
