I translated this years ago and never posted it. I quickly proofread it, but let me know if you spot any mistakes.

Lyrics: Takubo Mami
Music: URARA

asu kara kakeru mangetsu    michitarite mo setsuna yo
anata wo kou kurushimi wa    eien no shifuku to naru

The full moon that begins waning tomorrow, now has a moment of content
The pain of loving you will become the bliss of eternity

kinuzure no oto ga    sukirou wo wataru
ruri no marigouro    soradakimono wo
sakimidareru hana wo shiita
yume no shitone    anata dake ni

The sound of rustling clothes spreads through the open-air corridor²
The lapis lazuli–coloured incense burner³, perfuming the room⁴
The abundantly blooming flowers are spread all over
On the pillow in my dreams, there is only you

kokoro wa jougen no tsuki    tsunoru omoi osaete
anata wo matsu setsunasa ga    shinjitsu no shifuku to naru

My heart is the waxing moon, weighed down by my worsening emotions
The fervour of waiting for you will become the bliss of reality

fureru sugao ni    kaori dake matoi
namida no arika wo    ougi de kakusu
niji no ito de orasete mita
koromo ni sode wo    tooshite okure

My trembling unadorned face, clothed only with scent
My tears’ whereabouts, hidden by a folding fan
I tried to weave rainbow threads
And delay slipping my arm into the sleeve of my robe

shitan no hako ni tojikome    dare ni mo misetakunai

I lock away our rosewood box, for I want none to see it
With only our pinkies tied together,⁵ our bodies and hearts are content

hohoemu anata wo dare mo    kizutsuketari dekinai
tada hitotsu mamoritai mono    ubawasetari wa shinai
hakanaki utsuriga tonari    semete soba de nemurou
anata wo kou kurushimi wa    eien shifuku to naru

You, smiling, cannot bring harm to anyone
I’ll never let go of the one single thing I want to protect
Your fleeting, lingering scent will sleep beside me
The pain of loving you will become the bliss of eternity

Notes:

  1. “Yogomori” can mean praying all night at a shrine or indulging/wallowing in the night.
  2. In Heian architecture, the sukirou is a open-air corridor extending from the tainoya. For more information, see Shinden-zukuri Estates of the Heian Period.
  3. A marigouro is a spherical incense burner with engraved decorations. See Takasago Collection for some examples.
  4. Soradaki/soradakimono is a method of burning incense to fill a room developed during the Heian era.
  5. Refers to the East Asian belief that everyone has a destined person, who they are tied to by a red thread on their pinkies.
