Just watched the first episode of Yuri on Ice and oh my god it’s gay. It’s so gay. Victor straight up seducing Yuri K in his own home this is more than I could have ever imagined. I was expecting to write some kind of angsty Cup of China fic and instead I was delivered this right into my hands oh my god.
(I’m eagerly awaiting the scene where Victor finds Yuri K’s shrine to him 😏)
Okay, more serious thoughts:
I was worried about the focus on the Grand Prix Final in the trailers, but the anime does know its competitions. I’m surprised Victor is even doing 4 quads in his FS though when even the best skaters are only aiming for 3. (Jin Boyang’s impact!) That said I’m sure his real-life basis Evgeni “without a quad it’s not men’s figure skating” Plushenko would approve.
I really loved the fact Yuri on Ice wrote an aria just for Victor. His program on the whole was well-animated with great detail on the head and arm movements, and I loved the spins. (Having the program’s last jump be a 4T–3T into a spin combo was slightly unrealistic though, lol.)
In general it seems they’re putting a lot of care into the figure skating while telling a lighthearted character-driven story, like any good sports anime. I’m so pumped for the rest of the series.
