2022 q2 music listening
I listened to less music than I would have liked these past few months, and I keep forgetting to buy songs on Bandcamp Friday. I accidentally blew out one earbud of my preferred pair and didn’t realize for weeks, then ended up switching between my spare good pair and my bad Apple pair during this period. During which I was trying to edit a fanvid. Imagine my surprise when I realized “Love of My Life” had a drumline? hahaha.
Nonetheless, here is some music. Faves are ★’d.
- Hitsujibungaku / Denpa no Machi
- I like the new Hitsujibungaku album more than I was expecting based on the singles! There’s just enough ’60s rock cues to make it interesting without departing too much from their shoegaze/dream pop roots.
- Happy Ever After / Cream Soda ★
- Here’s the token shoegaze song, from a compilation CD put out by the Hokkaido University light music appreciation club.
- Laura day romance / little dancer
- This band’s combination of delicate vocals with dreamy folk guitars is exactly what I need to relax to on a stressful work day.
- plums / Ake
- Sorry did I say one shoegaze song? Two shoegaze songs.
- Lausbub / Solaris
- A dark electronica song very different than the upbeat technopop they went viral for last year.
- Chisako & Junta — Difficulty ★
- An interesting tension between the lounge pop piano and skittering electronic percussion.
- Group2 / Ordinary
- The thing with taking inspiration from city pop or Shibuya-kei is there’s always the risk of being too boring, but this song manages to sprinkle in enough weird beats and tones.
- Harry Styles / Love of My Life
- As I mentioned previously, there’s a lot of 2000s–2010s influences on the new Harry album — from Mika to Stars to Carly Rae Jepsen. But I ended up latching onto this song because I started making a fanvid. I didn’t even do that in the 2000s!
- Chilli Beans. / Vacance
- This sounds like an indie pop take on 2018 Bangtan with some amped-up guitar thrown in.
- per se / the prophet
- IDK what it says about me or them that I like per se when they’ve obviously been listening to too much Ling Tosite Sigure.
- HUR / Poisonous (album ver.)
- If we’re talking Cool™, that title’s got to go to this girl group I previously mentioned from a 2020 Taiwanese audition show. This is a song originally from said show, but since rearranged from an electronic pop number to something more j-rock-via-Dreamcatcher.
- Be:First / Betrayal Game
- Somewhere in between cute and tryhard is where Be:First landed with their latest single, and it finally works. Plus the beat and chorus is catchy. (If the audition show origin story of one of your members is “graduating university and has a salaried job lined up”, the cute concept just doesn’t work!)
- Zombie-Chang / No to Ieru Genki
- Zombie-Chang’s brand of hardcore electronica meets new wave is great to bang your head to, and Stress de Stress is such a fitting name for an album released in 2022.
- Suiyoubi no Campanella / Orihime ★
- Utaha, their new vocalist, seems to be finding her stride. It’s not quite the instant classic “Diablo” was but it’s got a lot of same vibes.
- Batten Girls / Yoimiya
- Speaking of Suiyoubi no Campanella, their writer-producer Kenmochi Hidefumi has been also been writing songs for girl groups lately and is clearly back in his deep house groove. Except I’m not back on my deep house bs, so this song hasn’t really clicked for me. It’s still catchy, though, and elegantly integrates traditional instrumentation into its production.
- NELN / STMN
- An instant classic pop melody paired with production that is fun for the sake of fun.
- Templine + Hoshimiya Toto / Skycave ★
- This duo continues to put out incredibly catchy songs. Love the glitchy vocals in the intro and outro.
