Full Moon blu-ray release imminent

AnimEigo's edition of Full Moon o Sagashite (Looking for the Full Moon) is about to release! Part 1 in just a few days, Part 2 coming later. This series intrigues me first as a post-Sailor Moon throwback to the idol genre, and second as, well...

Mitsuki's a normal 12-year-old girl who dreams of becoming an idol singer... except she's dying of cancer. With a surgery looming that could damage her vocal chords, and a grandmother completely against Mitsuki's dreams of showbiz, it seems like her wish will never come true. But when she's visited by two shinigami - Takuto and Meruko - Mitsuki makes a promise. If they can help her fulfill her dream, then she will part with her soul willingly when the time comes.

...a much more melancholy premise than you'd expect from a magical idol throwback!

This is the first time the whole English dub will be released, after its original release plans were interrupted. Exciting times!

Digital Gardening

Hi everyone! I recently got into the idea of digital gardening. According to IndieWeb, A digital garden is a particular practice of creating & growing an online and public IndieWeb presence that focuses more on topics & relationships than a timeline like blogs, has content of different levels of development, is imperfect and often a playground for experimentation, learning, revising, iteration, and growth for diverse content, perhaps interlinked with other digital gardens. It’s kind of like a carefully tended digital commonplace book.

I was wondering if anyone else did digital gardening? I’ve seen more techy people use the SSG Quartz, and for non small web solutions, Obsidian is popular, others use Notion, Bear, etc. Tons of apps exist for this (r/digitalgardening is a good subreddit!) and I think you could use DW for it too! but I serve mine on a static hand coded site here on my personal website and my question is. If you have a public digital gardening on the small web, I’d love a link! If you like the idea and want to try it, let me know!

My Worldcon Schedule AND Boston Fan Expo (formerly Boston Comic Con)

Whew~! Readercon was a whirlwind, as expected, but so much fun. I had so many great panels, and I wrote down so many inspiring thoughts and quotes from fellow panelists. Two in particular from Vandana Singh: “There is an artificial line between nature and culture.” and “Shiva was a bisexual god before he got appropriated by mainstream Hindus.”

But now it’s time to gird my loins for Worldcon in Seattle! I leave in less than a week. But guess what…?

Fan Expo Boston

I got added to the Fan Expo Boston author lineup as well, being wrangled by Lovestruck Books, the absolutely fab new romance bookstore in Harvard Square, which has a huuuuge romantasy section, nice erotica section, and lots of other squee-worthy genres.

So this Saturday, August 9 I’ll be autographing Magic University at 11am at Fan Expo, along with Elizabeth Skarpnes (To The Gallows|on Bookshop & Amazon) and I.V. Ophelia (The Poisoner | on Bookshop & Amazon).

Then at 9pm I’ll be on an 18+ panel/writing workshop on How to Write a Sex Scene with Kim Swizz and I.V. Ophelia! The three of us will be giving advice (in graphic detail if necessary) on how to wring every last bit of pleasure from writing sex scenes! Whether you’re trying to keep it as low key as possible or you want to turn up the heat, we have techniques to share!

Fan Expo Boston is held at BCEC (Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, right next to the Westin Seaport.)

THEN, it’s off to Seattle Worldcon!

My Worldcon schedule is spread out over five days and four different venues:

Media roundup Jun-Jul

An Immense World, by Ed Yong:
Pop sci about animal senses. One scientific error (if you consider light to not be instantaneous, neither are electric fields), though of course some of the science has actually updated in the years since it was written (hypotheses on why birds call in the morning). This is probably one of the best pop sci books I've read: well written, informative, and interesting, when discussing both material I already knew or didn't know. Highly recommend.

Inspector Imanishi Investigates, by Seichō Matsumoto, translated by Beth Cary:
Police detective investigates a mysterious death of an unknown person. The best parts were about 1960s Japanese society, but I overall wasn't a fan. It's probably because of expectations around coincidence, plot holes around why someone would take certain actions, that sort of thing. Was a bit of an awkward feeling translation, but I thought it was interesting that this was abridged in order to be published as a mystery and because the original was a serial and needed polish.

Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel (DNF):
Thomas Cromwell during his rise. Certainly the style was interesting, but I was somewhat bored 15% of the way though... I think knowing how it ends does detract (which I don't usually find to be the case). Maybe I'm too immature a reader to enjoy this like it should be because I don't care enough about the subtleties of the language? Distinct Cromwell is my woobie vibe.

Lady Eve's Last Con, by Rebecca Fraimow:
Interstellar rom-com between a con woman and the sister of the man she is trying to get revenge on. A fun romp and I love prince type (female) love interests always, but does follow rom com logic.

Memoirs of a Spacewoman, by Naomi Mitchison:
Old school sci fi about exploring other worlds! I liked this well enough, and I appreciated the weird aliens (who still felt weird today!) But am not sure the social stuff aged as well (in terms of insightfulness / interesting newness). The fascist butterflies were a lot, but I am still thinking about them a month later...

Language City, by Ross Perlin:
The history of NYC through the lens of language. Frequently fell into the trap of lists, which I did not enjoy. I learned some things, but I think less than I wished to have (despite all the lists... density of information in the form of lists is not the way...)

Wellness, by Nathan Hill:
A couple that met as counter culture college students in the 90s in Chicago face the doldrums of middle age and marriage. I was Highly Skeptical at the superficiality of the psych major's understanding of psych (I think this is really the author's gap in knowledge) -- and I think compared to the poignancy and emotion of sections that probably were more in line with the author's actual experiences e.g. of the beauty of the prairie, Wellness the company and the supposed psychological research sections felt much less realistic and therefore frustrating. HOWEVER, overall I kind of loved it? All its disparate plot strands, spanning locations, people, and time, really came together in a perfect jigsaw puzzle way, and in the end I did really want to root for the main couple as a couple. Highly recommend.

The sunsets are very worth it

Moving in has been going well - we're mostly unpacked (...don't ask about the room that has a bunch of storage bins in it because we have like. no shelves to unpack them onto yet). On National Ice Cream Day, we picked up a solid wooden hutch for $20 from Craigslist with the help of friends with a bigger car, and we thanked them with ice cream at the local place, which turned out to also have a lot of other things going on that day - free popcorn, mystery ice cream flavor guessing, bubble machines, adorable bunnies and tortoises in pens enjoying the sunshine from two local rescues recruiting for volunteers. That was fun, and the hutch has come in super handy, as a lot of our kitchen cabinets don't make good use of the vertical space with their built-in shelving.

We've also been working on a few issues around the house, including new and exciting ones we discovered, like the fact that our house isn't grounded properly :D And apparently when our realtor swung by with the electrician on a day we were busy, she forgot to point out what we learned was the most expensive issue :`D (Though I think the work would have still come in under the 'seller must deal with it' limit.) Also had a bit of 'when it rains, it pours' because we had to take the car in for two separate problems as well. All in all, it was a bit of a stressful month, but at least we haven't discovered any huge new problems with the house. And we have a beautiful view of the sunset each evening. It makes me happy to see how it's slightly different each day.

It's also been Battleship time, which ended up being a strange experience for me this year, because I had the most fun I've ever had with my team, but the game was also the worst-run of the three years I've played, and a lot my feedback is going to be similar to feedback that they don't seem to have done anything with from last year. My gifts were both excellent, at least:
For Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather, a sff short story told through a lyrics analysis site commentary section, a fic featuring other forms of social media:

Fandom: Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather - Sarah Pinsker
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Characters: Original Characters
Additional Tags: folk horror, Epistolary, Documents, Social Media, Worldbuilding
Summary: A collection of posts and documents related to the village of Gall, Wiltshire, UK.

In-universe media figure skating wingfic - I don't know the fandom (yet) but I didn't feel like I needed to:
Aloft (890 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: The Favorites - Layne Fargo
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Katarina Shaw/Heath Rocha
Additional Tags: Wings
Summary: FRANCESCA GASKELL: It's good to stand out from the pack, but not, like too much, you know? You don't want to look like every other skater, but you want to look like a skater. Kat Shaw's look around that time was definitely unique… but maybe not kind of unique that always helps in competition.
