Monthly Listening: Jan 2025
Just watched an entire Justin Trudeau press conference live for the first time ever.
- mekakushe / Kimi wa Snorkel ★
- Producer Tomggg pulls out all the stops for this delightful cheery pop track.
- Aiobahn / non-reflection feat. Makino Yui
- January seems like a great time for floaty trance.
- Suichu Spica / Spica (CW: flashing, motion sickness)
- Dreamy math rock.
- higma × Sakanaction / echo × Sayonara wa Emotion ★
- It takes a lot for a mashup to impress me, but this mashup/rework of “Sayonara wa Emotion” (one of my all-time songs) and “echo” does it.
- chilldspot / Bouhaku
- Only got around to checking out chilldspot’s 2024 album this past month. Here, the lyrics are about giving up, but the music is all rage.
- Aprilblue / Yoru Dake ga Shitteiru
- Heavy, smoky shoegaze.
- inuha / Byouki no Kodomotachi
- As usual, I spend January catching on other people’s year-end lists, and this is from a year ago :’) inuha does a great job of making Vocaloid work with shoegaze & britpop.
- Yuguo (Kingdom of Rain) / Bugan Chudong de Jiyi (CW: motion sickness) ★
- Since we got a few J-pop videos set in Taiwan last post, let’s go for some Taiwanese dream pop set in Japan.
- mukeikaku / dull (CW: flashing, motion sickness)
- That feeling of walking around a residential neighbourhood at 3am.
Bonus: Atom Boyz roundup
Most of the groups are on their second album cycles now so it’s a good time to check back in. Plus all the civic NYE shows were a little unescapable.
- Vera / Step Aside (CW: flashing)
- Why are they wasting Bobby and Skylar’s beautiful voices on this ~tough guy~ music. Thankfully most of their second album isn’t this bad; Bobby wrote some solid tracks like “Hai You Wo Zai Ne”.
- U:nus / Hai Dao Lian Hong Hong
- A yet-to-be released song. Behold that chicken dance.
- Fenix / Sinkhole
- Did I get lost in the 90s? Catchy though.
- Ozone / New Moon
- Someone please save Ozone from big budget CGI.
