Monthly Listening: Jan 2024
Are there some songs from 2023 I only listened to in the first week of Jan? Of course not :>
- Atarashii Gakko! / Toryanse
- I was a fan of them before they signed to 88rising, and after the signing it seemed like they were struggling to find a new more international sound that worked for them as a group. Between “Tokyo Calling” and this I think they’ve finally found it.
- Mother Mother / Nobody Escapes (CW: horror)
- This is more Montreal indie pop than what I’m familiar with from Mother Mother, and I’m not sure when they changed their sound? But it’s a cool video!
- Usay Kawlu / Tomangic (Cry Out) (CW: flashing) ★
- Dark art pop with Amis roots.
- Rachel Chinouriri / The Hills
- A proper britpop ballad.
- Bray me / Awaking
- The best way I can describe this is Saiyuki Reload Gunlock or Gintama opening. It’s that flavour of 2000s j-rock with a heavy bass line and a deep tongue-rolling vocal.
- eastern youth / Sunset Man (CW: body horror)
- Catharsis for your January blues.
- Brandy Senki / Stockholm no Hako (CW: flashing, weapons, death)
- Posting for the bass lick.
- WurtS / SF Tokyo
- 2000s j-rock melodies paired with 2020s sing-rap.
- Qubit / Beautiful Days ★
- Daoko goes britpop! Her light voice contrasts well with the grungier instruments.
- Hoshimiya Toto + Templime / Pop-Aid ★
- Fun pop punk number with the pop punkiest production. Why not throw the whole kitchen sink into the song blender?
