Monthly Listening: Nov 2022
Bit of a busy month for music; I removed a lot more songs off my draft than usual. Faves ★’d.
- Pasocom Music Club / Sign feat. Fujii Takashi ★
- This might have contemporary production but it’s got the same catchy chaos as a Kodocha opening.
- Jiyuugaoka & Sangatsu / Shinsekai Cybernetic
- A dream pop take on new wave city pop.
- kiki vivi lily / Romance
- Cheery, twinkly café j-pop like it’s 2002.
- RYUTist / PASSPort (prod. Hasunuma Shuta) ★
- RYUTist asks what would happen if you pair acid house with indie pop brass.
- Hot Chip / Broken (CW: flashing)
- Hot Chip have been mining the 80s for a while, but “Broken” sees them turn their shovels from disco to new wave.
- yahyel / Highway (CW: flashing)
- The video shows kinda cursed HTML; the music starts off as their usual electronic dark pop with rock roots before dissolving into a new-for-them dance break.
- Lausbub / Wind City ★
- It’s the technopop teens again, with an uneasy start-and-stop of a song.
- Louis Tomlinson / The Greatest ★
- It was so hard to pick one off this album; I changed my mind every week! I had the demo for this song on repeat finishing up my lastest fic.
- Faye (Chan Wen-ting) / yong ai (CW: flashing)
- Mid-2010s dark pop vibes.
- Iris / Keep You Safe (piano ver.)
- This is one of my fave story songs in Deemo II so far.
- Limonium / Ichibansen Kudari
- I can’t resist the guitar-driven mid-2000s j-drama theme sound.
- Spool / (image for) drawing on canvas
- Fuzzy guitar countermelodies lead into a dissonant chorus-turned-breakdown.
- ayutthaya / Landmark
- Sprinkles of math rock cacophony woven with a soaring chorus.
- Qujila Yoluno Machi / Eden ★
- Piano-driven pop rock in the vein of indies-era Gesu no Kiwami Otome but less jazz and more guitar.
- Mega Shinnosuke / Saraba Uchuu, Kanata Mirai (CW: flashing)
- 90s j-pop-rock, down to the music video homage to hide with Spread Beaver.
- AprilBlue / Land of Words (Kotonoha no Kuni)
- Closing out with more shoegaze.
P.S. Since the song wasn’t out when I previously rec’d what turned out to be a demo, here’s Louis Tomlinson / Lucky Again (non-demo version).
P.P.S. My arms are so sore from shovelling snow.
